Potentilla fruticosa

March 1998 I bought this shohin at an auction during the EBA conrgress in Bruges, may 1997. It belonged to a former member of the K.B.K. whose collection was dispersed after he passed away. It was put in this large container in winter 1997-1998 as the smann shohin pot gave trouble with watering in summer. At the time I lived in a town appartment with only a narrow balcony and plenty of sun reflexion from a white painted wall and no cover or shade. May 1999 Despite it's bad placement, the tree survived and developed even new shoots. March 2000 A few months after this picture (and a new repotting during winter) we moved to the east part of Belgium where we had a large garden at our disposal. The tree was one of the first inhabitants of the rock garden we created in 2001 and lived happily there for about 4 years July 2005 In 2005 it became obvious that the tree became a potentially good subject for bonsai. The trunk had swollen considerabely and strong branches were abundant. October 2005 Time to dig the plant out of the rock garden and to put it in a large wooden crate. There it will remain as long as necessary to recover and to undergo the first preparatory steps towards a fine specimen. September 2006 The tree has quickly regained full strenght and did permit heavy pruning of the main banches. Two prunings were necessary in 2006 April 2007 During winter, a first branch selection was done and the overall shape of the tree is defined. July 2007 Culture results are satisfactory this year. Next spring, it will be put back in a bonsai pot. March 2008 Evolution is rathar spectacular in one year. But the construction of the foliage only in in it's first stage. It will take some more years before it will be in balance wirth the trunk. Care must be taken to preserve the natural growing habit of the species which is bushy and not really treelike. April 2009 The tree got new wiring in winter. Careful work is necessary as the branches are very brittle and can break easily. The silhouette is more in line with the type of the plant: loose and playfull. The secundary trunk has been separated a bit more from the main one with a spacer. To be continued... In de winter 1997-98 zette ik hem in deze grote pot omdat ik toen op een appartement in de stad woonde en het kleine shohin potje problemen gaf bij het water geven. Ik had enkel een smal balkon en veel last van zonweerkaatsing op een witte muur met geen enkele mogelijkheid om hem te beschutten van de vlakke zon. Mei 1999 Niettegenstaande de moeilijke onstandigheden overleefde de boom het goed en produceerde zelfs nieuwe takjes en loof. Maart 2000 Een paar maand nadat deze foto werd genomen (en een nieuwe verpotting gedurende de winter) verhuisden we naar oost België waar we een grote tuin ter beschikking hadden. De struik werd een van de eerste inwoners van de rotstuin die we in 2001 aanlegden. Hij leefde daar tevreden gedurende de volgende 4 jaar. Juli 2005 In de zomer 2005 werd duidelijk dat de boom goed potentieël had om een goede bonsai te worden. De stam was goed aangedikt en er waren veel sterke takken aanwezig. Oktober 2005 Het is tijd on de boom uit te graven en hem in een grote houten kist te plaatsen. Daar zal hij in blijven tot hij volledig is hersteld en de eerste voorbereidende stappen heeft ondergaan op de weg naar een fijne bonsai. September 2006 De boom kwm snel weer op volle kracht en liet mij toe de hoofdtakken goed terug te snoeien. Twee snoeibeurten waren nodig in 2006 April 2007 Tijdens de winter werd een eerste takkenselectie uitgevoerd. Het algemeen silhouet wordt stilaan zichtbaar. Juli 2007 De groei was dit jaar zeer bevredigend. Volgende lente komt de boom terug in een bonsaipot te staan Maart 2008 De evolutie is tamelijk spectaculair op één jaar tijd. Maar de constructie van de kruin zit pas in een beginstadium en het duurt nog wel een paar jaar vooraleer zij in balans zal zijn met de stam. er moet ook rekening gehouden worden met de groeistijl van de soort die op een struik moet gelijken en niet echt op een boom. April 2009 De boom werd opnieuw bedraad tijdens de winter. Er dient voorzichting gewerkt te worden daar de tekjes zeer broos zijn en gemakkelijk breken. A cette époque, je vivais en appartement en pleine ville avec seulement un balcon étroit comme emplacement et de gros problèmes de réverbération des rayons du soleil contre un mur blanc, sans possibilité d'ombrage. Mai 1999 Malgré les mauvaises conditions de culture, l'arbre survivait et produisait même de nouvelles pousses et un feuillage bien sain. Maart 2000 Peu après que cette photo fut prise, nous avons déménagé vers l'est de la Belgique où nous disposions d'un grand jardin. Il y devenait un des premiers occupants de la rocaille que nous avons construite en 2001 et y vécut paisiblement pendant 4 ans. Juillet 2005 En été 2005 il était évident que l'arbre avait le potentiel pour redevenir un beau bonsaï. Le tronc avait grossi considérablement et il y avait de grosses branches à profusion. Octobre 2005 Il est temps de prélever l'arbre et de le mettre dans une grande caisse en bois. Il y restera le temps écessaire pour se refaire une bonne santé et pour y subir les premières interventions préparatoires sur le chemin vers un beau spécimen. Septembre 2006 L'arbre a vite retrouvé sa vitalité et m'a permis de raccourcir considérablement les branches principales. Deux tailles ont été nécessaires en 2006 Avril 2007 Une première sélection de branches a été faite en hiver. La silhouette générale de l'arbre devient visible. Juillet 2007 La croissance est satisfaisante cette année. Au printemps prochain, l'arbre sera remis dans une coupe à bonsaï. Mars 2008 L'évolution est assez spectaculaire en un an. Mais la construction de la ramure ne fait que commencer. Il faudra encore quelques années pour qu'elle soit digne du tronc qui la porte. Il faudra aussi veiller à ce que le bonsaï respecte la croissance naturelle de l'espèce, qui est un buisson plutôt qu'un arbre classique. Avril 2009 L'arbre a reçu une nouvelle ligature en hiver. Il faut travailler avec précaution car les branches sont très cassantes et peuvent se briser facilement. Le tronc secondaire a été espacé du trond principal à l'aide d'un petit bout de bois. Despite it's bad placement, the tree survived and developed even new shoots.

March 2000

A few months after this picture (and a new repotting during winter) we moved to the east part of Belgium where we had a large garden at our disposal.

In 2005 it became obvious that the tree became a potentially good subject for bonsai.
The trunk had swollen considerabely and strong branches were abundant.

Time to dig the plant out of the rock garden and to put it in a large wooden crate. There it will remain as long as necessary to recover and to undergo the first preparatory steps towards a fine specimen.

September 2006

The tree has quickly regained full strenght and did permit heavy pruning of the main banches.

During winter, a first branch selection was done and the overall shape of the tree is defined.

July 2007

Culture results are satisfactory this year. Next spring, it will be put back in a bonsai pot.

March 2008

Evolution is rathar spectacular in one year.

But the construction of the foliage only in in it's first stage. It will take some more years before it will be in balance wirth the trunk.

Care must be taken to preserve the natural growing habit of the species which is bushy and not really treelike.

The tree got new wiring in winter. Careful work is necessary as the branches are very brittle and can break easily. The silhouette is more in line with the type of the plant: loose and playfull.

The secundary trunk has been separated a bit more from the main one with a spacer.

Ik kocht deze shohin tijdens een verkoop per opbod tijdens het EBA congres in Brugge in mei 1997.

Hij behoorde toe aan een vroeger lid van de K.B.K. wiens collectie werd verspreid na zijn overlijden.

In de winter 1997-98 zette ik hem in deze grote pot omdat ik toen op een appartement in de stad woonde en het kleine shohin potje problemen gaf bij het water geven. Ik had enkel een smal balkon en veel last van zonweerkaatsing op een witte muur met geen enkele mogelijkheid om hem te beschutten van de vlakke zon.

Mei 1999

Niettegenstaande de moeilijke onstandigheden overleefde de boom het goed en produceerde zelfs nieuwe takjes en loof.

Maart 2000

Een paar maand nadat deze foto werd genomen (en een nieuwe verpotting gedurende de winter) verhuisden we naar oost België waar we een grote tuin ter beschikking hadden.

De struik werd een van de eerste inwoners van de rotstuin die we in 2001 aanlegden. Hij leefde daar tevreden gedurende de volgende 4 jaar.

Juli 2005

In de zomer 2005 werd duidelijk dat de boom goed potentieël had om een goede bonsai te worden.
De stam was goed aangedikt en er waren veel sterke takken aanwezig.

Oktober 2005

Het is tijd on de boom uit te graven en hem in een grote houten kist te plaatsen. Daar zal hij in blijven tot hij volledig is hersteld en de eerste voorbereidende stappen heeft ondergaan op de weg naar een fijne bonsai.

September 2006

De boom kwm snel weer op volle kracht en liet mij toe de hoofdtakken goed terug te snoeien.

Twee snoeibeurten waren nodig in 2006

April 2007

Tijdens de winter werd een eerste takkenselectie uitgevoerd. Het algemeen silhouet wordt stilaan zichtbaar.

Juli 2007

De groei was dit jaar zeer bevredigend. Volgende lente komt de boom terug in een bonsaipot te staan

Maart 2008

De evolutie is tamelijk spectaculair op één jaar tijd.

Maar de constructie van de kruin zit pas in een beginstadium en het duurt nog wel een paar jaar vooraleer zij in balans zal zijn met de stam.

er moet ook rekening gehouden worden met de groeistijl van de soort die op een struik moet gelijken en niet echt op een boom.

De boom werd opnieuw bedraad tijdens de winter. Er dient voorzichting gewerkt te worden daar de tekjes zeer broos zijn en gemakkelijk breken.

De tweede stam werd lichtjes van de hoofdstam verwijderd door een stukje hout.

Je l'ai mis dans cette grande coupe étant donné que le petit pot à shohin posait problème à l'arrosage. A cette époque, je vivais en appartement en pleine ville avec seulement un balcon étroit comme emplacement et de gros problèmes de réverbération des rayons du soleil contre un mur blanc, sans possibilité d'ombrage.
