1996:
My first bonsai…
One amongst many thousands: an interesting shape, but not at all trained according the classic rules.
1998: Picture under: the pot is more suitable, but the tree has two tops and an ugly branch starts left inside the main bend of the trunk.
Picture right: the branch inside the bend has been removed and the right top somewhat reduced.
1999:
Heavy wiring was applied in 1998. The right part of the tree has been lowered in an attempt to create horizontal branch structure and to allow the left part to develop into the apex of the tree.
2000:
The classic bonsai triangle begins to take shape.
The picture shows the tree in it's future position, with the lower branch at the back of the tree. This needs further repotting, with the trunk in the back half of the pot. This will be postponed until 2001 to avoid too much stress on the tree who had to endure repeated heavy wiring.
2001:
The tree has been repotted and placed in it's final position. The top has a rounder shape and must develop somewhat more at the right side. The bottom foliage needs more development too.
August 2002:
The tree is steadily growing.
In a few years time, the to will have reached the desired width. The tree will then be repotted in it's final (and shallower) pot.
March 2004:
The tree still has the same shape, but compare this picture with the one I took in winter 2000.
Ramification has been multiplied by a factor of 10 and the tree looks very healthy. Despite low temperatures this winter (the tree withstood -12°C in a non heated poly tunnel!) new growth is already appearing.
June 2005:
The tree structure has been rectified this winter.
Growth is continuous since the beginning of spring. The tree will have to be repotted next year. The tree is not root bound and the soil mix is still OK, but the pot suffered from frost and is severely cracked.
May 2006:
Repotting has been done in March. (See report)
The trees sprouted a little later in the season, but this is normal, as winter lasted very long (we had snow until March 31) and the tree has been repotted. I will trim a little less severely this year.

1996:
Mijn eerste bonsai:
Een exemplaar zoals er duizenden bestaan: een interessante vorm, maar helemaal niet bewerkt volgens de klassieke regels.
1998: Foto links: de pot is reeds beter aangepast, maar de boom heeft twee koppen en een lelijke tak vertrekt naar links vanuit de binnenboog van de stam.
Foto onder: de gewraakte tak is weggenomen en de rechter kop is reeds wat ingekort.
1999:
Een drastische bedrading werd aangebracht in 1998. De ganse rechterkant van de boom is naar beneden getrokken zodat er horizontale plateaus ontstaan en de linkerkant zich als top van de boom kan ontwikkelen.
2000:
De klassieke bonsaidriehoek wordt stilaan zichtbaar.
De foto toont de boom in zijn toekomstige, definitieve positie met de onderste tak naar achteren gericht. Daarvoor moet echter nog een laatste verpotting gebeuren, met de stam in de achterste helft van de schaal. Dit wordt tot 2001 uitgesteld om alle risico voor het overleven van de boom te vermijden na herhaalde zware bedradingen.
2001:
De boom is verpot en in zijn definitieve positie geplaatst. De kop toont een rondere vorm en moet aan de rechter zijde nog wat verder uitgroeien. Ook het onderste plateau moet nog voller worden.
Augustus 2002:
De boom gaat rustig zijn gangetje. De kroon zal binnen een paar jaar de gewenste omvang vertonen. Dan zal de bonsai in zijn definitieve (en wat plattere) pot worden geplaatst.
Maart 2004:
De boom heeft nog steeds zijn zelfde silhouet, maar vergelijk de foto met deze van de winter 2000.
De vertakking is vertienvoudigd zonder kruisende takken en de boom is in uitstekende gezondheid. Niettegenstaande zijn overwintering in een niet verwarmde serretunnel (hij doorstond du -12°C deze winter!) loopt hij reeds uit met piepkleine blaadjes.
Juni 2005:
Wintersnoei is uitgevoerd vorige maand.
Er is continu productie van nieuwe groei. Een verpotting zal volgend jaar moeten uitgevoerd worden. Niet dat de boom zelf dat nodig heeft, maar de pot is door de vorst fel gebarsten.
Mei 2006:
De verpotting is uitgevoerd in maart. (Zie rapport)
De boom liep iets later uit dit jaar maar dat is normaal, daar we 31 maart nog steeds sneeuw hadden en ook omdat de boom pas is verpot. Ik zal dit jaar iets minder drastisch terugsnoeien.

1996:
Mon premier bonsaï…
Un exemplaire comme il en existe des milliers: une forme intéressante, mais pas du tout travaillé selon les règles classiques.
1998: Photo à l'extrême gauche: la coupe est déjà meilleure, mais l’arbre a deux têtes et une branche disgracieuse part vers la gauche à partir du creux du tronc.
Photo à gauche: la branche dans le creux a été enlevée et la tête de droite un peu réduite.
1999:
Une ligature draconienne a été posée en 1998. La partie droite de l’arbre a été abaissée pour créer des plateaux horizontaux et pour permettre à la partie gauche de se développer comme apex de l’arbre.
2000:
Le triangle d ’un bonsaï classique commence à se dessiner. La photo montre l’arbre dans sa position définitive future, la branche inférieure à l’arrière du tronc. Mais cela demande un dernier rempotage, en déplaçant tronc vers la partie arrière de la coupe. Cette opération est postposée à l’année 2001 pour éviter tout risque pour la survie de l’arbre après des ligatures astreignantes et répétées.
2001:
Le bonsaï a été rempoté et placé dans sa position définitive. L'apex est maintenant plus arrondi, mais doit encore se développer un peu du côté droit. Le plateau inférieur doit également encore s'épaissir.
Août 2002:
L'arbre continue son petit bonhomme de chemin. Encore quelques années et la cime aura l'envergure souhaitée et l'arbre pourra être placé dans son pot définitif (un peu moins profond)
Mars 2004:
L'arbre a toujours la même silhouette, mais comparez cette photo à celle prise pendant l'hiver 2000.
La ramification s'est décuplée et l'arbre est en pleine santé. Malgré un hivernage en tunnel non chauffé (il a subi du -12°C cet hiver!) il débourre déjà.
Juin 2005:
Une taille d'éclaircissement a été faite en hiver.
Bonne production continuelle de nouvelles pousses. Il faudra prévoir un rempotage début 2006, non pas que la motte est trop fournie, mais le pot à souffert du gel et s'est fêlé.
Mai 2006:
L'arbre a été rempoté en mars. (Voir rapport)
Le débourrage est un peu plus tardif cette année-ci, mais compte tenu du décalage de l'hiver (nous avions encore de la neige le 31 mars) et le rempotage c'est tout à fait normal. Je taillerai de façon un peu moins sévère cette année.
